What makes a good team, Ralph Krueger?

Ralph Krueger, former coach of the Swiss national ice hockey team and current Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Austria Wien, impressed us with his expertise and clarity in our exclusive interview. In addition to questions about his career and the challenges he has faced, he also answered our questions about team building and leadership.

The cornerstone of a successful team
Ralph Krueger emphasises that trust, respect and clear communication are the cornerstones of a successful team. A good team is not just made up of individual talents, but of people who support each other. According to Krueger, the key to success lies in the ability to focus on common goals as a unit, to put one's ego aside and to stick together in difficult times. He also shares valuable insights from his time as a coach and manager and explains how to build a strong team culture in which each individual takes responsibility while still prioritising the group.

The biggest challenge: The switch from ice hockey to football
One of the most significant moments in Ralph Krueger's career was the switch from ice hockey to football. The transition from his role as a player to a coach was already a source of concern, especially as he was also responsible for his family. When he then made the decision to switch from ice hockey to football, it was another significant step that was accompanied by many uncertainties. Krueger admits with a grin that starting out in English football, especially with his North American accent, was a challenge. In the early days, it even happened to him from time to time that he accidentally said ‘soccer’ instead of ‘football’. But the challenges - be it through linguistic misunderstandings or working in different countries - ultimately made him stronger.

What makes a good team?
Krueger has a clear idea of what makes a good team. For him, it is essential to put your own ego aside and put the team first. Communication plays a key role here, in an honest, open and straightforward manner. Everyone in the team should always have the same level of information - surprises must be avoided. For Krueger, strong leadership means serving others and climbing the summit together as a team. This journey is much more fulfilling than going to the top alone.
